Ekundayo’s life story is a very unique one (basically his mother and father split and he spent 7 years toted along with his dad on the run until his father passed away and he lived with his sister where he discovered his uncle’s black book that changed his life). Ekundayo’s work illustrates the sacrifices we make in the pursuit of fulfillment, while simultaneously questioning the actions taken to attain it.

Today, I feel:

Like nothing can stop me!

If you had three wishes, what would they be?

For my first wish, I would like to feel like I did when I would draw and paint as a youngster before art became a way to make a living.

Second, I would wish for a HUGE! studio spot were I would invite my favorite artists to create work and collaborate on projects.

Lastly, I would want all my friends and family to be healthy and happy pursuing what they want in life.

Do you consider yourself a funny person?

I'm seriously funny.

If you had one magic power, what would it be?

I would want the power to teleport to places that no other human has ever been before.

Something that makes you happy?

When I listen to good music and I’ve been painting for so long that I loose all track of time.

Something that makes you mad?

When companies lie to get you to buy something and then they don't deliver all the things they promised to get you to buy it in the first place!

What was your favorite subject in elementary school?

Recess.

If you feel a creative block, what do you do to jumpstart inspiration?

I get out of the studio and just live life or get into shit. When I haven't thought about what I'm working on for a couple hours, I come back to it with fresh eyes.

When someone is taking a photo, do you smile for the camera or turn your head?

I smile while I turn my head so the picture comes out blurry.

Are you a social network enthusiast?

Nope.

What is a quality you don’t like about yourself?

I can’t show my teeth when I smile.

Last good book you read?

Tuesdays with Morrie.

Who has had the most impact on your life?

Apollo Creed.

Are you spiritual?

All praises to the most high.

One word to describe your artwork?

Relentless.

Stability, but I've come to expect the unexpected.

Depends on who's looking, I feel like my art will only make sense in my mind. Ss long as the viewer can take something positive from my work, I'm happy.

The most trouble you’ve ever gotten into:

A police task force was once assigned to arrest me and some friends.

Where do you imagine yourself in five years?

I imagine I would be thinking about what I would be doing in five years.

Accepting original works in 2-D, 3-D & photography including prints, drawings, mixed media compositions, paintings, photographs, and moveable sculptures, which depict the “Spirit of Women, fashion, the female form, preventative health or aid.

Objective: To exhibit a small but cohesive selection of work reflecting the concepts listed above. (4-6 pieces depending on size) Work can be purchased the night of the event and the week leading up to the event through a website.

Requirements
Artists are asked to submit a portfolio off 8-10 samples of existing work, artist vitae and or website. If your existing work does not reflect the theme of the show please also submit up to 4 proposed pieces or concepts for the event.

Labels for Love and its representatives as the jurors reserve the right not to display all work submitted.

A grassroots fundraiser has been developed in order to assist street artist, Jesus Saves, whose work is currently involved in a legal dispute. AVEONE of both Art Whino and Destroy Rebuild NYC, has organized an art auction wherein each artist donates orginal paintings and 100% of the proceeds generated during their sale go directly to supporting Jesus Saves' legal expenses. So far, many artists; Col, Matt Siren, TMNK, and AVEONE have participated, and we hope that you will too!

Art Whino's G-40 Summit is currently featured on the website for Addiction and Art, a project that focuses on "the application of art for recovery from addiction," and has stemmed from the former Innovators Combating Substance Abuse. Two of our artists, Star 27 and Scott Brooks, are included in their book Addiction and Art that inspired the creation of the organization, and another, Margaret Dowell, is a co-editor. It is definitely cool to see some representation from such an awesome group. If you get a chance, check out their site and look for our guys in their book!

Geotagging; Data as Art?

The above map of London is a compilation of geotagging data that documents photographs taken by both tourists and locals in popular geographic locations. Eric Fisher, the mastermind behind the project, interpreted the location of Flickr photographs, and categorized them by who took the photos (blue means local residents, red meaning tourists), and where. By looking at the finished result, one can deduce which destinations are most densely photographed, and by whom.

Interview with Tatiana Suarez

I had the awesome opportunity to interview our upcoming artist, Tatiana Suarez!

ML: Tell us a bit about yourself; what are you into, what do you like to do outside of painting, any other jobs on the side?

TS: I've been lucky enough to focus full time on my painting for the last couple of years. When I'm not painting, my side jobs include freelance design and illustration work. As for what I do for fun, currently I enjoy watching movies. Spending time hanging out with loved ones. Chatting over some drinks. On rooftops. While playing dominoes. Yep.

ML: Why painting as opposed to any other fine art medium?

TS: It's just the medium I was introduced to really early on, and I just stuck with it. Painting and drawing also runs in the family. Plus it's fun and messy.

ML: Were you always into visual arts, or did you start some where else and end up finding out this is what you really wanted to do?

TS: As a kid, I wanted to grow up to be either an artist for Disney, or a vet. Art class was the only class since elementary that I looked forward to attending. It was my only ' A+' class, haha. I never went to art school, but my parents always had me enlisted in after school cartooning and painting classes. In college I stopped painting and focused more on graphic design. It wasn't until after a couple of years of working in advertising, that I decided to once again focus on developing my paintings. All in all, it was a decision I'm really glad I made.

ML: Where does your imagery stem from?

TS: Ladies, fashion, movies, life experiences, cultures & heritage, folklore, critters, colors, shapes...

ML: You include an odd assortment of creatures to accompany your figures, any particular reason why you choose the 'pets' that you do?

TS: I just really love animals, especially the unusual ones that others might find creepy. I’ve played momma to plenty of exotic pets growing up…from chameleons to sugar gliders.

ML: Is there a dialogue behind your work; are there subtle narratives to be understood?

TS: Most of my work to date has been simply portraits, just focusing on the women, their emotions, and adorning them. I keep them mysterious. They are meant to be enjoyed by the viewer, and adapt to their own narrative.

ML: If you could characterize this body of work on the fly, which personal descriptions immediately come to mind?

TS: Curvy, colorful, seductive. I like to picture drums thumping in the background, heh.

ML: What other genres of art are you attracted to outside of your own style of work?

TS: Cartooning, animation, illustration, digital art...

ML: Do you draw inspiration from any other artists, past or present?

TS: Of course! Oof, there’s way too many for me to name. Here are a few from the top of my head: Gil Elvgren, Alphonse Mucha, James Jean, Audrey Kawasaki, Chet Zar, Dave Cooper, Rockin’ Jelly Bean, Lori Early, Fafi, Nouar Boldy. Just a few names that help make my mind tick.

ML: Overall, what is your take on the New Brow scene in contemporary art?

TS: It’s great! * thumbs up * Just an awesome opportunity to explore, experiment, challenge and create some honest, true to heart, attention-grabbing art.

ML: As an emerging artist, what do you think is the biggest challenge in the contemporary art world right now?

TS: It's like anything else? So many people doing the same thing as you. Be original. Try and stand out.

ML: As artists, we all experience the evolution of our work; What do you see yourself doing next?

TS: Yes, always evolving and learning! I’m not too sure yet on what the future holds. I plan on exploring my work, perhaps composing some more narrative, and personal pieces. I want to continue painting on walls and have also been curious on playing with some 3d stuff, we’ll see!

ML: What do you like most about your work, and what you do?

TS: The entire process is always a ride I enjoy. I go through so many changes and detours with my pieces, plenty of shape and color shifting. When the piece finally starts coming together and I feel in control…it’s really a great feeling. I’m just so lucky to be able to do what I love.

ML: What has been your greatest achievement so far as an independent artist?

TS: Oh man, greatest achievement so far has been the opportunity to show over seas! Seeing my name on art blogs I've always followed, painting on a wall…

ML: What are you looking forward to most about coming back and showing in D.C., any exciting things you’re going be getting into (well, besides hanging out with us. haha) ?

TS: Well I just look forward to being in DC again, I was only there for a short period of time. Meeting new people of course. Honestly, I really haven’t had a chance to plan anything out yet, it’s been hectic!

ML: Any shout-outs, words of advice, or general nonsense you'd care to share with our readers?

TS: I would like to give a shout out to my friends and family for all of the support. The awesome boyfriend for his patience, thanks for putting up with my crazy, freak-out moments in preparation for the show. Some words of advice: Keep loving what you do and be dedicated. Some general nonsense: Boop.

DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities

DC Creates! invites artists from the DC Metro area to submit works available for purchase. Selected works will be added to the Art Bank Collection. Over 2000 works are displayed in DC Government building corridors, conference rooms and office space open to the public.

This year's Art Bank purchases will reflect District identities. DCCAH seeks to acquire works expressing the diversity of culture, vibrancy of life, and wide spectrum of identities in Washington. Two and three-dimensional works of all forms, including paintings, photographs, sculpture, ceramics, and digital media will be considered.

Eligibility: All DC metropolitan artists are eligible to apply.

Musical Performance by Tamara Wellons

Ocha Record's Artist Tamara Wellons is a Metropolitan based vocalist whose addictive blend of soul, jazz and house is fresh, flavorful and classic. Wellons' debut record "Life Is" debuts on Ocha Records, a joint venture between House DJ/Producer Carlos Mena and Osunlade. The album features production by Osunlade, Carlos Mena, Wale Oyejide and Kokayi. Since the March single release of Tamara's single "Oh Well," (voted traxsource.com's Best of 2007 Top 100 Singles ) the songstress has been been busy performing and finishing up the recording of her much-anticipated full LP release. In 2007 Tamara enjoyed success after the "Oh Well" release with performances throughout Washington DC (Mirrors, LIV), New Jersey and Detroit (DEMF), and New York. The single was also featured on the Grammy Award winning DJ, Roger Sanchez Release Yourself Volume 6 Dance Compilation CD and is a play list favorite among numerous djs/podcasts and mix cds. Weekend Observation

While working at the gallery this weekend, I decided to take note of how many times an audience member observed how 'refreshing' our space is. It's now Sunday, and I've already lost count as to how many times Art Whino has been associated with 'refreshing,' 'a breath of fresh air,' or simply 'chill.' I may be a new face around here, but I think that has been the general consensus since Art Whino's opening almost three years ago. Our space is dynamic, and filled with a wicked inventory of work that's appreciated en masse by so many different people. Everyone that comes to visit has an interesting story to tell as to what art pieces they enjoy, where they come from, and what work they do themselves, et al. It's so nice to take in all the positivity, and see how the space radiates with good vibes as people get engaged with what they're seeing.

Sticking with the good ju-ju motif; what do you appreciate about Art Whino?

Every day we're bombarded by advertising imagery, promoting products from all sides of the capitalist spectrum, and well--for once, this one caught our attention. A new ad campaign commissioned by EIZO, a company who specializes in producing high-def radiographic imaging equipment, have put a new spin on how their merchandise is presented to the medical community. Like they say in X-Ray departments across the U.S., 'We do it better in the dark,' and this campaign is no different. EIZO, in collaboration with Butter, a German-based advertising agency, has come up with a 2010 calendar featuring digitally rendered X-Ray Pin-Ups. YES! The medical community DOES have some sex appeal! And what better way of spicing things up with a little bit of radiation, and some equally exquisite...structural anatomy?

In anticipation for the coming summer months, Art Whino is gearing up for a ton of exciting events. June 26th, we're traveling to Austin in collaboration with Seventy Seven Gallery to host Personality Instantly: The Art of Nick Morris, whose work "calls to mind a time of artistic girl-next-door pin ups and sleek muscle cars, with a tinge of sci-fi." So if you happen to be strolling the streets of Austin, TX or looking for an excuse for a weekend excursion, you should stop in and check out what's hanging.

We've also partnered up with Mie N Yu restaurant in Georgetown to accentuate our fabulous opening nights! We'll be setting up for a special INDULGE event on July 9th, to feature a variety of Mie N Yu specialties, a bevy of refreshments, live music, good friends, and fine art; what else do you need in life...ehh?

Also in July, we'll be hosting Tatiana Suarez's solo show featuring her Malagueta series. I've been honored with the opportunity to interview Ms. Tatiana, in collaboration with RVA.com, prior to her opening on the 19th; so I will be sure to post our Q & A session as soon as it goes down! In the future, I'd like to interview all of our opening artists featuring a few audience generated questions, if possible. We love seeing our followers getting involved with what we do, so I definitely look forward to seeing your curiosities come through via posted comments!

In August, Art Whino will be in Georgetown to set up the big top for our Urban Carnivale show. We're currently on the hunt for side show performers to feature two levels of freakshow antics, including a trifecta of exhibiting artists, mingled with tarot card readings, street performers, and other strange and fascinating performances. It's going to be a blast, and if you know us well enough--we can throw a party! You're not going to want to miss this!

As you can see, we've got quite the summer line-up! And we're adding even more as we go, so keep checking back a time or two! Wonderful artist and friend, Sylvia Ortiz, was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. In efforts to raise funds for her chemo treatments, friends have helped put on a fundraiser, this Saturday. Titled "Cirque De Boobles". Artists have been asked to respond to her trademark booble icons.

The sketching session begins at 7pm and ends at 9pm and is free. We will have 15 special edition blank sketchbooks for sale at the show as well but you are welcome to bring your own sketchbook.

ARTIST BIO:
Tatiana Suarez (b. 1983) is a Brooklyn-based Miami native. This emerging artist is an alumni of the University of Miami's Graphic Design program, and also works as a freelance illustrator. Her charming style is distinctive -- first, the trademark eyes that draw the viewer into a beautiful and surreal world. Suarez takes full advantage of the oil paint's ability to create creamy, soft images on canvas. Rich with symbols that stem from her Brazilian and El Salvadorian heritage, subjects appear as if they are under water, frozen in lovely stillness. The doe-eyed figures look childlike, but also exude sexual overtones, ornamented with plants, insects and other unsettling accompaniments. Beauty is presented concurrently with exotic -- even creepy -- creatures to create enchanted narratives.

Kelly Castillo: Renaissance Reduxx, Opening Success!

Kelly Castillo's solo show premiering her 2010 series, Renaissance Reduxx, was a grand success. A big thanks to all who came out and showed their support, as well as a definite hand of applause for our visiting model, Mourna, without whom our sketching session would not have been such a triumph, and our live music accompaniment; Vodka & Donuts. It was a treat having Kelly here sketching alongside of us, as well. Besides Shane losing his cup throughout the night, I don't think any of us could have asked for a better opening gala.

We had a multitude of winning sketchers who took home prizes, which included special edition sketchbooks featuring designs by the lovely Kelly Castillo, or collectible figurines from our private stash. Our winners were judged depending on personal taste, sexiest or funniest representation, and overall 'mad skills' by both Mourna and our volunteer audience models. It was definitely exciting seeing everyone jumping in and getting in on the action.

The sketching session was such a hit with the crowd, that we're going to continue the tradition with our next opening in July featuring work by the Brooklyn-based Miami native, Tatiana Suarez and her solo series Malagueta.

Texas artists Dave Lowell and Graham Francoise join Iowa artist Brent Houzenga in a powerful Now Brow exhibition, three distinct but cohesive artistic stylings. These artists deliver works that cover the whole spectrum, from the illustrative works of Graham Franciose contrasts well with the stencil works of edgy Dave Lowell and interpretive Brent Houzenga. Together they pack a powerful punch of New Brow figurative works with a Texas twang.

Dave Lowell

Dave works with a combination of multi-layer stencils and freehand spraying. His preference is using found materials as canvas when possible. He likes the challenge it presents; ad how the materials are utilized to contrast and balance the aesthetic of his work. He includes elements of text and writing which adds a level of exchange with the viewer. He also has two cats and says he is still growing up in Austin, Texas.

Graham Franciose

Relatable and honest, Graham's works are some of the most gentle, yet emotionally evocative works ever featured at Art Whino. His imaginative illustrative paintings are small in size and big on emotion, each depicting its own little narrative, often dreamily reminiscent, reaching deep into the human condition and showing us all little pieces of ourselves along the way.

"A lot of my work deals with the quiet moments in a story, between the excitement and action where characters deal with internal conflicts, doubt, loneliness, wonder, apprehension. My work often comes across as sad and melancholy, but there is always a sense of hope that I am trying to portray."

Graham Franciose graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Hartford Art School in 2005l. He has exhibited his work for the last five years across the United States and has been published in various art publications and children's educational books. When he is not painting he is probably riding his skateboard, rolling skeeballs, spending time with his girlfriend, or wishing he was doing any of those things.

Brent Houzenga

Brent Houzenga is an artist living in Des Moines, IA. Houzenga is originally from Fulton, IL. He studied printmaking and graphic design at Western Illinois University before moving to Des Moines in 2006. Since relocating to Des Moines Houzenga's work has been featured in many group and solo shows on the local and national level.

Houzenga’s inspiration stems from modern art, comic books, punk rock posters and album covers, graphic design, street art and the desire to accomplish something with his time spent on earth.

I was born in Ballarat, just over an hour out of Melbourne. At the age of six I knew I wanted to be an artist and, at a similar time, discovered surfing and my passion for the coast had begun. When I was at secondary school, one of my teachers had said only two per cent of living artists make a living off their art, so I decided to become a graphic designer.

In many ways it was a positive result for eventually becoming an artist. I went to Chisholm Institute in Caufield where I met fellow designer Dave Bowers and, over time, we hit it off. After working in Melbourne for a few years after college I moved to the west coast of Victoria and, in 1990, Dave and I started a clothing label called Umgawa. It was incredibly successful but our inexperience caught up with us and from there I went on to become the art director at Quiksiver in Torquay, which had been something I had always aspired to. To be living down the coast working in an industry that molded in around surfing was a dream come true. A few years later I bean my own freelance graphics company called Anyhow, servicing the surf street wear industry working for the biggest labels in the world. The business peaked around 2004 when we were invited to speak at Semi Permanent graphics conference in Sydney and then later at Agideas with a host of international designers.

During this time a group of mates were having an small exhibition in Torquay and insisted that Dave and I put some art in. I had not painted for over 20 years and knowing where to start was a little confronting. Thanks to my graphics business some of my staff had introduced me to screen printing technique that I could do from the garage. With a little Andy Warhol inspiration I created my first batch of paintings and ignited a fire that was soon to consume me. Over the next couple of years I worked on my art in my time off but my passion for graphics was starting to fade. In the particular industry I was in, which in many ways had lost its soul, it seemed like we were just being asked to make copies of successful prints from overseas without getting the client into any copyright issues. Creativity was becoming harder to find.'

I started working with a life coach, feeling a little lost for the first time in my life, and eventually worked out it was art that I wanted to do all along, which seemed amazing as it was so obvious to me as a kid. We worked out a plan that I could finance my life if I cut my overheads and did three days of graphics per week and then Thursday and Friday were for painting. It took all the guilt away from thinking it was just a hobby. She also got me to set a date for an exhibition. I spoke to Dave, as during this process the two of us started mucking about on joint canvases after being inspired by the Basquiat film, and he agreed to have an exhibition in May 2007 in Melbourne. So we booked an art space in Fitzroy.

We exhibited both solo and collaborative art and had a sell-out show. For the next show, someone had suggested we should get our own stand at Art Sydney. Once again we sold out and this set me up enough to decide to become a full time artist. We went on to have more sell-out shows and soon found ourselves in both France and Hong Kong. It has been an incredibly successful journey ever since.

Art Whino: MIAMI.... A Whino's experience at Art Basel

So after about week or so I am finally back 100% from my Whino Adventure. I have to tell you it is a completely different experience doing a show at Art Basel than just being a spectator. It was PHENOMENAL though. Met so many great people!! From exhibitors, collectors and spectators everyone was very supportive of our efforts. I have to admit now that its over it was a pretty ambitious show. It was a massive 8000sqft with over 250 artists on exhibit and 15 artist installations. We converted the space in 3 days flat which included construction of perimeter walls, Installation of Nine 18' foot hanging walls and painting. Thanks to Susannah, Luz, Roberto, Lee and the crew who put their hearts and sweat to make it happen! So now.....Here is the voyage!

First step is to build a makeshift wall factory in your backyard!

Then Paint them nice and white.....
Once we built them all we loaded up the truck and went on our 18hr drive with our 26foot Truck behind us

We arrive at South Beach and of course when in Roman do like the Romans....DRINK WET WILLYS on Ocean Drive. We met up with Justin Lovato who flew in from Cali and had a good first night.

The next morning we arrive at the space and start our 3 day transformation. Here is a before of the space.

As we would setup we would catch glimpses of other people setting up. This was a little quick makeshift grassy area and walking surface to catch some outdoor street art.

This was a delightful abandoned car. Part of the installation? or Part of Miami's downtown?

In further exploration of the wall we found this awesome Barry McGee on the wall

The we caught up with Supher and Scotch. They did the awesome piece behind them.

During the night all sorts of things were growing all over the place.

Who ever owns this Lamborghini has a lot of class. They obviously were going to our show!

We did some live painting on Thursday (Pics of our show and Live painting being posted on next blog) After the live painting we had an amazing dinner at Urbanite Bistro I had this Fred Flintstone sized Prime Rib. It was no joke the best I ever had. If you are in the Wynwood district YOU MUST STOP AND EAT THERE!!!!

The Next Morning all the Primary Flight Boys were in action. I wanted to catch up with all of them but our show kept so busy. We did manage to see a lot of them. This one is of Jim & Tina Darling

Our good friend Daryl Pierce who wasnt going to do anything got sucked in....You can get away from it! Hahahaha

The London Police boys were there next to Daryl and the Darlings. These guys were super cool!

Around the corner we ran into our buddy Ron English. He was casually working on this awesome piece. The man breaths and sweats talent!

We ran into El Mac and Retnas piece. We got to chit a little with El Mac. Amazing piece as always.

We caught up with our boy Dolla. His piece is directly behind us. The line up is Dolla, Scotch, Justin Lovato, James Walker and Dave Lowell.

We met Dabs and Myla as they were working on this piece. Super cool Peeps.

We tried to go to the openings but again it was hard with our own show. We hit the Multiversal Show. We got to see a little live painting but missed Tara McPherson and Buff Monster who started after we left.

Missed Scope, Pulse and Aquas openings. YES. It sucked not going. Next year we are going to plan it to not miss any of them and somehow do our opening in between theirs. On our last day we did a marathon sprint and checked all three fairs in 4 hours. Yes 4 hours.

Here is the shot from afar

As we walked about 100,000sqft we were losing steam. This exhibit was funny. You basically go in the room and she hands you this air bubble. She pops it. Squeezes out the air. Gives you a very slow tender hug and then hand you the empty bubble. I was temped to go in but I would have just stayed on the bubbles and not left.

Back at our show the hot dog stand came and everyone jumped to get a steamy dog!

Our last stop was Scope which was literally 7 feet from our space. They had this cool outdoor music installation. As I was watching it I remembered meeting Alexis the owner of Scope 3 days before they opened and how he was out there with Gaia setting up the fair. I got to chit chat a little with him and it was refreshing to see the man behind the curtain being a genuine good person! I wanted to catch up with him afterwards but time took the best of me.

a ….Thursday was a live painting demo at Urbanite Bistro….I’ve never seen so many talented artists in one location….it was an honor to be a part of this event….everyone got to work straight away creating masterpieces….I started out with a Lascaux throwback, caveman style (see above photo)….

Thanks for everyone who made last night show EPIC!!!!! It was truly an amazing event. The art was Phenomenal! It was great to see all the Artist coming out showing their support including artist who flew down like Brent E. Houzenga and Dusitn Spagnola. The music was awesome and having HIP HOP LEGEND DMC perform for us was unreal!!!

There was a film crew filming the show for a New TV Series Airing next Fall called “We The Children” Reality Docu-Drama staring DMC and Grand Master Flash. Keep an eye out for that!

I will be uploading video and pictures soon BUT in the meantime here is a great recap from Art Whino Artist James Walker. Thanks again James for the great photos!

Black Cats Resident DJ Lil'e, aka Erin Myers, specializes in rare extended mixes and one-hit wonders whose names have been swallowed by time. Remember Flesh for Lulu, Kon Kan or Anything Box? But Lil'e does not sacrifice a solid dance floor just to showcase her extensive record collection.

Lil'e, 32, who started "Right Round" in 2002, focuses on skillful mixing, but she still finds a few moments of each song to step back from her mixer and do a little dancing herself. When she plays at other venues such as Felix or Saint-Ex, Lil'e strays far from the '80s, breaking out underground hip-hop, big beat and assorted electronica.

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels changed music and made history when he broke down cultural barriers 25 years ago with his legendary band Run-DMC. It would be hard to overstate his influence on popular culture. From the first rap group to grace the cover of Rolling Stone to the first to appear on MTV, to the first to go gold and platinum, Run-DMC impacted the world. 30 million record sales later, and seven years after the untimely death of his bandmate and dear friend Jam Master Jay, DMC still continues to create, inspire and motivate.
His critically acclaimed single “Just like Me” featuring Sarah McLaughlin spoke to his new revelation of discovering he was adopted and began his journey down another life path, in search of his birth mother. His struggle was captured in the 2007 Emmy Winning VH1 documentary DMC: My Adoption Journey, giving him tremendous insight and purpose and prompting him to become an advocate for adoption and children in foster care. In between his work as a musician, published author and speaker, DMC co-founded with Sheila Jaffee, the Felix Organization- a nonprofit that works with adoptees and foster children. Join us for a night of imaginative fun, featuring live artist art toy customizations by five Art Whino artists, as well as over 60 DIY vinyl toys ready for visitors to bring to life with their own creative customization ideas! Come meet artists, watch the customization in action, and join in to express yourself by customizing your own toy.

Need another reason to come out? It's for a good cause! Proceeds from the silent auction of the evening will benefit Best Buddies, a non-profit dedicated to creating one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The five showcased artists’ pieces will be auctioned off during the silent auction at the end of the evening, so stick around to see the excitement and take home your favorite piece!

The evening will also include live DJ, snacks, and cash bar.
If you want to participate, feel free to bring your own materials. Basic paints and brushes will be provided.

Art Whino and The International Lifeline Fund (“ILF”) present Life Essentials, a four-city tour that brings together the best Visual and Musical Artists in support of ILF’s ground-breaking humanitarian and environmental projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The exhibit will feature the works of over 100 artists from across the country and around the globe. The tour will kick off in Washington, D.C. with a two-night event on Thursday and Saturday, September 24 and 26. Following the D.C. launch, the show will hit the road with stops at Art Basel in South Beach on December 5-6, New York City in March, and San Francisco in June.

Thursday, September 24, 2009, will be an invitation-only event featuring live musical performances, a presentation by ILF, and an exclusive sneak preview of the artwork in advance of the official opening of the “Life Essentials” show on Saturday. Guests will be given the opportunity to purchase the artwork and otherwise to support ILF’s vital mission through participation in a silent auction and individual donations. Many celebrities, politicians, ambassadors, and other DC power players are expected to attend. Savory hor’dourves and sweet desserts will be served along with libations.

Art Whino and Life with Cancer® present THE ART OF LIFE, a special art exhibit to raise money for support programs for cancer patients and their families. In addition to a special exhibit of James Walker paintings and a meet and greet with the artist, twenty five other Art Whino artists will exhibit their work. The event will showcase live concerts by the up and coming indie rock band, Once Okay Twice, and an acoustic guitar set by Bud Wilkinson. There will also be a break dancing performance by the acclaimed troupe Flying Fists From the Floor. Artists will be doing live painting of vinyl toys. Tarara winery will provide wine for a special tasting.

James Walker’s Artist Statement:
…I never made a conscious decision to become an artist, it’s something I’ve always done for as long as I can remember, I make pictures and draw and paint and collage debris and objects as intuitively as possible and I’ve never specialized in anything except making the best art that I can and I don’t often think of myself as an artist but more of a sociologist or philosopher…my background is in photojournalism and I take a documentary approach to everything I do with my work and I feel that my most successful images are ones that develop as a natural extension of existing …all of my amalgamations are nothing more than a feverish attempt to create some sort of semi-tangible cohesion out of everyday experiences through obsessive collection of imagery and stories and adventures that I compile as the proof of life lived to bring a general awareness that every second exists for just that and at the same time facilitating this idea the only way I can, through my artwork, all of it being the cliff notes to my inclusion in this maelstrom of existence, examining the fact that everything is in a constant state of fluctuation, deterioration, and reconstruction, never lasting more than two blinks of an eye which may be why humans invented the concept of measuring time while we fruitlessly strive to sustain and avoid any contact with the inevitable thermodynamic deconstruction of our selves and everything we see as real and I’m enamored with the idea that everything is beautifully entropic and nothing will ever retain, permanently, its current physical form, which is why I try be mindful of the present moment, the only thing that is not simulacra, without which we would have neither the future nor the past (both of which carry significance only as stubborn illusions), and with the realization that the present moment is the only thing that truly exists I gather information and juxtapose found treasures all decomposing and beautifully dancing in wonderful objectification with images in various states of archival-ness (frequently subconsciously depicting all too clearly our own frailty taken for granted) and I am helping to organize an introspection and focus that is easily lost in the cellularphonic espresso-paced world that I am also contently enveloped in, intensifying awareness of the swirling cacophony and freneticism of it all and all of the feelings and emotions colliding, and as I work I just let the chaos flow without judgment, acknowledging its existence as neither good nor bad, just that it is there, with hopes of creating nothing that is stale but instead just as alive as the subjects it depicts...

The band has been compared to Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, Broken Social Scene, The Cure, the Clash, with a dash of Incubus/Weezer(-esque) charm. Throw in a killer string section via violin and a soulful chamber music type sound and you'll get ONCE OKAY TWICE. One might say we draw from a lot of influences to create a unique upbeat bouncy indie vibe. They are a DC party band with a hint of 80’s flair.
